INTRODUCTORY Note

This handbook is designed to help students understand the various notations used in the marking of essays and other written assignments. It is not meant to serve as a comprehensive or independent introduction to English grammar and style.

Students should get into the habit of regularly checking the notations on their marked written assignments against the particular sections of this handbook to which the notations refer.

This edition of Guide to the Marking of Written Assignments is very similar to earlier editions, but there have been some important changes, and in some sections the numbering is not the same as in previous editions.

A printed version of this text is available in the college book store. The contents of the two versions are identical, but the format is somewhat different.
